#2 - Caer-Dineval, Caer-Konig, and Kalvin's Cairn - 13 April 2024
When asking around the only inn in Caer-Dineval we are told that there are no lodgings, maybe at the castle, where Speaker Crannoc resides. However, no one has seen him for a long time. We get the impression that the inn-keeper, Roark, wants us to investigate, without saying it straight. When approaching the castle we are stopped at the gates by guards wearing amulets in the shape of swords. We are not let in. We later learn that they call themselver The Black Swords.
Desperate for somewhere to spend the night we break into the boarded up inn of Dinev's Rest, alerting no less than six duergars hiding inside. They chase us through town, up to the castle, where guards from the castle join the fight until all of them are dead. We get invited to the castle and get our own lodgings there. We met their leader, a tiefling named Kadroth and saw Cora Mulphoon's son Huerwar in the company of a tiefling named Fel Suparra.
After settling in, we had an audience with soothsayer of The Black Swords, Hethyl Akorran, who told us of a seriuous duergar threat to Icewind Dale. She died after she told us.
The next day we set of to Caer-Konig. We met the speaker, Trovus who told us about the thefts in the town, and we decided to help. We hire proprietor of Frozenfar Expeditions, Atenas Swift, and his sledhounds to follow the tracks leading from the town, as well as taking is to the basecamp where the expedition of Garret Velryn from Targos travelled.
Following the tracks the thieves left, we come upon an outpost carved out of a hillside. We see no movement, but decides to leave it until later.
After reaching the basecamp and resting, we start climbing Kalvin's Cairn. After escaping an avalanche, we come upon a fallen climber. It is Garret, who is quite exhausted. Right when we start helping him up, we get attacked by two crag cats, a fight which we win!
Rumors heard (Caer Dineval) - In Caer-Konig, local establishments are beset by vandals and thieves that skulk about unseen. The town speaker, a dragonborn named Trovus, could really use some help catching the interlopers.
Quest (Caer-Dineval) - Xardorok Sunblight, a duergar warlord, will conquer Icewind Dale unless the characters defeat him. Xardorok has a fortress on the surface, hidden in the Spine of the World. It contains, among other things, a forge powered by the still-beating heart of a red dragon. Xardorok has a plan for the systematic destruction of Ten-Towns, which the characters can discover if they search his fortress. The characters will die if they face Xardorok too soon. They must test their mettle against the horrors that haunt the farthest reaches of Icewind Dale before they can hope to survive the perils of Xardorok's fortress.
Quest (Caer-Konig) - "The town has had some thievery troubles. No one's seen anything, really. Just the other night, the lantern over at the Northern Light was stolen. Cori won't let me hear the end of it because I haven't been able to find those responsible. Not yet, anyway. But I have a knack for this stuff."

She wanted us to track down and kill a suspected murders, Sephek Kaltro who travels with a small trading caravan, owned by a dwarf named Torrga Icewein. We travelled to Targos, and then Bremen where we stalked Sephek and killed him in a barn. Quickly fleeing Bremen the following morning we set sights on Caer-Dineval. On the way we were attacked by two Crag Cats, and when one was killed, the other fled. We ended the day by sleeping in an outhouse in Caer Dineval.
Rumors heard (Bryn Shander) - In Bremen, fishers are being terrorized by a monster that lives in Maer Dualdon. Strange that none of the other towns on that lake have been harangued by the monster.
